 Meet the Characters

Hola! My name is Lolo, and I am a little Spanish bull. I wear short trousers that look like shiny brown fur, I have two big horns that stick out of my little hat. I also wear a short red jacket with a white shirt and little tie. I have a red sash across my waist from which hangs my little bull’s tail. At first, I wear brown leather shoes, but the Moon will soon gift me a pair of dazzling ruby heeled shoes, that make music- just like hers! I have white skin and a short blond moustache.

I am only young and am still learning a lot about the world. I like to dream, I like to play, and what I like the most is smelling flowers. I don’t like to play rough, I don’t like play fighting, or loud noises or music. I don’t always feel like I fit in with the other bulls in the farm. This makes me feel a little shy and lonely. And because I don’t always feel very happy, I move quietly, with my head down, and my shoulders slumped.

But everything changed the night I first saw the dazzling Moon dance. I was amazed her spectacular movements, her beautiful dress, and the power of her performance. After that I watched the Moon many times and realized that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like her!

But it was hard for a bull to perform the movements of the Moon. It took a lot of help from Luna, practice, determination and belief in myself to learn how to express myself the way I wanted to.

Finally, after my adventures with the Moon, I became the dancer I dreamt of being! I now wear a beautiful red skirt; my shoulders are draped in a red shawl of yellow flowers. I no longer have horns, because my body has changed; I dance with beautifully coloured fans, a dancing cane, and of course, my glorious red shoes. But the most beautiful thing I wear is a big red rose behind my ear that was a gift from Rosario when she finally accepted who I was.

Now, I ask my friends to call me Lola, and they all do! I know how to dance just like the Moon, and walk with my shoulders back, my chin up, and a spring in my step.

Hola! My name is Luna Flores, and I am the Moon, a woman who lives up in the stars. I wear a beautiful blue dress that is decorated with stars and has a very long skirt. I wear golden shoes with heels that make music. I also wear a dazzling headpiece with a shiny moon on its top. I have white skin and very red lips and my hair is dark and tied in a braid.

I only come out at night. I like to look pretty and am a little vain, but I am also very caring and compassionate. I love dancing and performing, and I am a little bit dramatic. I make very big movements with my arms, I love dancing with my skirt and making it fly across the stage. I can be a little bit silly, but above all I love helping people who might need guidance or a bit of light on a dark stormy night.

When I first meet Lolo the bull, I give him a red rose to show him my affection. And later, Lolo saves me from a scary mosquito that was trying to ruin my show! I saw that Lolo was lonely and needed a friend, so I decided to teach Lolo how to dance. It made me sad to see Lolo feel so upset whenever Rosario wants to fight him, so I gave all my love to Lolo and helped him on his journey to becoming a famous dancer. “

Olé! My name is Rosario, and I am a female bull fighter. I wear golden, bejewelled jacket and trousers. My shoes are also golden, and I carry a long red cape. I have white skin, dark red lips, and shiny black hair tied in a braid. I am very brave, I have nerves of steel, and I love showing off my skills.

I love playing by the rules, and I get angry when people don’t follow them or don’t behave like they’re supposed to. I am one of the most famous bullfighters in the world, and one of the few women in this profession. Because most bullfighters are men, I’ve had to work very hard to prove myself and be accepted in society.

That is why I get so frustrated when I encounter a little bull, called Lolo, who does not want to fight with me! I get very frustrated because he doesn’t follow the rules, and makes me look silly! Every time I come out to fight with Lolo, he scares me off with a different dance move. This makes me feel embarrassed and despairing.

What makes me most angry is that Lolo doesn’t want to follow the rules of my game. But when I see that Lolo- who now wishes to be called Lola- dances so beautifully, I realize that dancing is much nicer than fighting. And although it’s important to follow some rules, it is very important to let people be who they wish to be.

 Set and Lights

Want to hear more about the set and the lights in The Bull and Moon? Choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra tells you all about them and what to expect when you watch the show.

Hello my name is Carlos Pons Guerra, and I am the director for the Bull and the Moon. I’m going to talk to you about the set design and lighting before you come and watch the show.

This story is set in a country called Spain, that has lovely and warm sunny days all year round, and beautiful nights where you can hear frogs sing.

The set for the show is a big wooden red box painted with yellow and white circles. It has a little wooden ladder on the right hand side, and is placed in the centre of the stage. The box is decorated by many, many colourful flowers, both in bunches and in garlands.

The lighting for The Bull and the Moon plays with ideas of night and day. During the night, you will see a big white circle projected against the back of the stage, which represents the moon. When the moon disappears, the lighting colours are bright yellos, oranges and some reds, to look like a warm sunny day in Spain.

Sometimes, the lights will go a little bit dark, particularly when the bull is on his own. The stage will not go completely dark; and the low lights help us to express the sad emotions the bull feels. These are only short moments and are quickly over when the Moon reappears in one of her many funny and exiting entrances.

We hope you really enjoy the show!
